For three years I paid a matchmaking service to find me a partner.
Every matchmaker starts with an interview. The industry calls it an intake: the conversation where the matchmaker learns who you are so they know who to introduce you to. It takes the place of the questionnaire a dating app makes you fill out.
My interview was a twenty-minute phone call. It covered how many dates I wanted a week, an age range, what I found attractive, and how far I'd drive. Nobody ever followed up to ask anything deeper.
I went on three dates in three years, and none of them led to a second one.
That call is the reason kAI exists. Most people have never used a human matchmaker, so they don't know what a good interview is supposed to feel like. Mine taught me what it shouldn't feel like: a short checklist dressed up as a conversation. kAI is built to do the opposite.
What Is kAI?
kAI is the AI matchmaker inside InTimid. You talk to it by voice, and it listens. A text option is coming soon, for extra privacy on the bus or train, or whenever you'd rather type than talk.
You never fill out a profile or write a bio, and there's no grid of faces to swipe through. Over a series of conversations, kAI learns how you think, what you value, how you handle closeness, and what you're actually looking for. Then it uses what it learned to propose matches.
The idea is simple: if you're better one-on-one than in a crowd, you should be judged the way you come across one-on-one. A conversation shows that. A photo and three prompts don't.
How Is kAI Different From a Human Matchmaker?
A traditional matchmaker gets to know you in one sitting, usually an hour or less, and often much less. They take notes, form an impression, and work from memory and a short form.
kAI takes a different approach:
- Ten conversations instead of one. Each usually runs 15 to 25 minutes, depending on how deep you go, how many questions you ask kAI, and how often you ask it to explain something a different way. You take them on your own schedule.
- You can stop and pick up later. If you need to leave a session halfway through, you resume it where you left off.
- Every session has a focus. No single call tries to cover your whole life.
- Nothing depends on a first impression. kAI isn't deciding in the first five minutes whether you're "a good client." It keeps listening.
- The cost is a fraction of a human service. Human matchmaking packages commonly start in the thousands of dollars. InTimid is free during the beta.
What Does kAI Ask About?
The ten sessions are:
- Basic: who you are, where you are in life, and what brought you here
- Character Traits: how you show up with people, what energizes you, and what drains you
- Sex & Intimacy: closeness, pace, and what matters to you physically and emotionally
- Your Past: previous relationships, what worked, and what didn't
- Your Future: where you want your life to go
- Lifestyle Preferences: daily rhythms, home life, and social habits
- Your Ideal Partner: who you're hoping to meet, in your own words
- Romantic Expectations: what a good relationship looks like to you day to day
- Adventure & Travel: how you like to spend time and explore
- Finances & Money: how you think about money in a relationship
You don't pick sessions at random. Finishing one session unlocks the next, and some sessions unlock more than one. That order exists because the sessions depend on each other: what you share in one conversation shapes the questions kAI asks in the next.
Do I Have to Answer Every Question?
No. kAI is a conversation, not an exam.
- You can skip any question, or simply say "I'm not sure."
- You can keep things private. If you tell kAI something is private, it's marked that way.
- Your match never sees your answers. Your conversations stay between you and kAI. They're used only to build your profile and find your matches.
Why Ten Conversations Instead of a Questionnaire?
A questionnaire captures what you say about yourself on one particular afternoon. Conversations capture more than that, for two reasons.
The sessions build on each other. Later sessions draw on what you shared earlier. For example, in Character Traits you might say how much independence you need in a relationship. Later, in Your Past, kAI asks how that actually played out in past relationships. What you did tends to be a better guide than what you predict you'd do, and kAI is designed to notice the difference.
There's real research underneath. The conversations draw on behavioral science and established frameworks from relationship psychology, covering attachment style, love attitudes, and personal values. You won't ever be handed a test or a score. The research shapes what kAI asks and how it listens, not how the conversation feels.
What Doesn't kAI Ask?
What a system chooses not to collect says as much as what it does collect.
In the Finances & Money session, kAI never asks your income, your savings, your debt, or your net worth. It's instructed not to record a figure even if you volunteer one. That session is about how you think about money with a partner, not how much you have.
Your appearance is not what kAI is listening for, either. That's where avatars come in.
Why Does InTimid Use Avatars Instead of Photos?
Instead of uploading real photos, every InTimid member is represented by an avatar. The avatars do three jobs:
- They protect your anonymity. Your real photos aren't out on the internet attached to a dating profile.
- They end the hunt for the perfect photo. Your avatar is an approximation of how you actually look. You don't have to take, choose, or retake a single picture.
- They reflect what you share. Your character stays the same, but the scenes change based on your conversations with kAI. If you talk about hiking, your avatar might be out on a trail.
Each session you finish unlocks three new avatars. You can choose one for your profile, and download any of them for free to keep forever and share on social media.
Who Decides the Match?
kAI proposes every match, and a human approves each one before either person hears about it. During the beta, that review is how we check kAI's judgment against a person's.
After a match is approved:
- Both people see it and both decide. A match is a mutually consented introduction. Nothing happens unless you both say yes.
- Messaging opens only after you've both agreed. There are no cold openers from strangers.
- You never have more than three active matches at a time. An introduction isn't a queue. Fewer matches give each one room to breathe, so two people can actually get to know each other instead of performing for a crowd.
- Unlimited audio and video calls are included. You can get a feel for the chemistry before you ever meet in person. A video call also lets you see that the person is who they say they are.
Every member also verifies their identity before getting access to the platform, so everyone you're introduced to has been verified.
Do I Have to Finish All Ten Sessions Before I Get Matched?
No. Matching starts immediately, not after session 10. Each conversation you finish gives kAI more to work with, so your matches get sharper the further you go.
One early tester put it this way after trying an early version of kAI:
"I'm not doing any legwork on this. kAI has done all the work for me."

Frequently Asked Questions
Is kAI a real person?
No. kAI is an AI matchmaker. A human at InTimid reviews and approves every match kAI proposes during the beta, but the conversations themselves are with kAI.
How long does it take?
Each session usually runs 15 to 25 minutes. Where you land depends on how deep you go, how many questions you ask kAI, and how often you ask it to explain something a different way. You can pause a session and pick it up later. Some people spread their sessions over a week.
Will my match see what I told kAI?
No. Your answers are used only to build your profile and find your matches. You can also skip questions or mark something as private.
Will kAI ask about my income?
No. kAI doesn't ask for income, savings, or debt, and it doesn't record a figure if you mention one.
How much does InTimid cost?
InTimid is free during the current beta in California.
